An audio medley

A sampling of some of my remarkable interviews

I’ve written and published a number of books based on my interviews with men and women of the World War 2 generation, but the bedrock of my archive is the audio. I don’t have any sophisticated software to create videos from my work, but I’ve put together a little compilation medley using the free version of Canva. The excerpts are taken from lengthier interviews, some of which will find their way into my Substack, but I just wanted to share this. Thank you for listening (and watching).

A little background: Karnig Thomasian was a prisoner of war of the Japanese in Rangoon, Burma, after his B-29 exploded over Thailand. George Bussell was a tank driver in the 712th Tank Battalion, with which my father served. Sam Cropanese was a crew member in one of the battalion’s tanks. Sam Mastrogiacomo was a B-24 tail gunner in the 445th Bomb Group. Clegg Caffery was an officer in the 712th. Lieutenant Jim Flowers was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his role in the battle for Hill 122 (which is the subject of my book “They Were All Young Kids”). Sarah Schaen Naugher was the widow of B-24 pilot Jim Schaen, who lost his life on the ill-fated Kassel Mission of Sept. 27, 1944. Stanley Klapkowski was a gunner in C Company of the 712th. Corman Bean was the navigator on Jim Schaen’s crew and became a prisoner of war. And Erlyn Jensen was the kid sister of Major Don McCoy, the command pilot was killed on the Kassel Mission, which is the subject of my book “Up Above the Clouds to Die.”
